Audio clip

It was Friday February 13, 1981. The room was filled with some 20 couples, sitting at tables decorated with red roses in small vases. On the walls were pink and red paper hearts. After a brief introduction, two men and two women in color-coordinated outfits stepped up to their microphones. The music began. They started to sing.

This was no upscale group. Their equipment was a cobbled-together conglomeration of home stereo speakers, and old sound system and a clutch of store-brought soundtracks. A pianist accompanied the songs they didn’t have tracks for. Yet there was a marked sincerity to this group, and a love for the Lord that couldn’t be denied.

It is now 2001, and the Sojourners have come a long way since that February night more than twenty years ago. Their sound system is top- notch, and professional speakers have replaced those old home speakers. Their soundtracks are original and specially mixed for them. Their alto singer, Susan Ammerman, pens some of their songs. Yet their simple faith and love for the Lord has remained unchanged.

The Sojourners are a team of two couples: Ernie (bass) and Dolly Gorog (lead/soprano) and Ron (tenor) and Sue Ammerman (alto). Over the years, they have grown spiritually and musically. Their styles cover the vocal spectrum, from light contemporary and southern gospel to traditional hymns and country. The group has even dabbled in Dixieland, western and jazz. Their close harmonies led one music director to comment, "The Sojourners have that pure four part harmony that reminds me of the Blackwood Brothers and the Speer Family."

Some of the Sojourners’ songs have hit the airwaves, both nationally and internationally, and while the group has yet to visit foreign shores, they have done their share of travel on the eastern U.S. coast. They have traveled as far north as New England, as far south as Florida, and as Far West as Ohio. The majority of their travel takes them to a variety of churches in New Jersey, New York, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania.

The Sojourners are down-to-earth people who believe they are called to sing and share God’s word in song. But that’s not all. They also include a dynamic puppet ministry, which incorporates original material written by tenor singer Ron Ammerman. And they sing wherever God leads—including churches, camp meetings, retirement homes, rescue missions, banquets, and music festivals. Their motto is " Go where God opens doors," regardless of denomination. Pastors and congregations appreciate their warm spirit, and they’re loved wherever they go.

Sometimes the Sojourners look back fondly on that winter night twenty years ago. but they mostly focus on the present, meeting new people and sharing God’s love. Despite the physical and financial setbacks; they look forward to what God has in store for them, where He will lead and most of all to the time when they’ll see Jesus face to face. Then they will sing a new song as never before.
